Tips & Help

cd-backup

I want to prevent data loss…

Data loss prevention starts with a regular, routine backup of all critical files including all files on your hard drive and also shared network folders (see your system administrator). The most common backup methods include burning these files to a CD/DVD, or copying/pasting files to an external USB, thumb drive or external hard drive. These items should be stored in a secure place. You can purchase backup peripherals at the UNH Computer Store.

My computer won’t turn on…

  • Check your computer’s power strip to make sure the reset button is not tripped.
  • If it’s a laptop, make sure your AC adapter is plugged into the wall and seated properly in the back of your computer. If you are using your laptop’s battery, make sure it is properly charged. Try pressing down on the power button momentarily to make sure the laptop is not in sleep mode.
  • Unplug any external hard drives, including iPods and flash drives, and try to start the machine again.

My computer is acting weird…
Go to the virus webpage and follow the step-by-step instructions for installing antivirus software, updating Microsoft Updates, creating strong passwords, and instructions on how to remove viruses and spyware from your computer.

My laptop is too hot…
Make sure there’s proper airway clearance underneath, and not to set it on anything soft like blankets, pillows or thick materials that will block the air intake.  Still not running cooler?  Get a can of compressed air, shut down the computer and blow out the air vents to make sure all the passageways are not clogged.

My wireless connection isn’t working…
Make sure you’re in a location with wireless access.

Check to make sure the card is turned on.  On Dell laptops, look for the WLAN icon over the keyboard to make sure it’s lit.  If not, try pressing Fn-F2 and/or the hardware switch on the side of the laptop (if equipped).

My computer is making funny sounds…
It could be a sign of impending hard drive failure.  Back up your valuable files to external storage or CD/DVD.  Regular backups are an important part of an overall strategy to safeguard your valuable and irreplaceable data!

Then, bring your computer to the Computer Repair Services desk in the MUB for diagnostics. If you are unable to backup your data yourself, the CRS can attempt the backup for you.

I spilled liquid on my computer…
Shut the computer down and remove the battery immediately.  Bring it to the Computer Repair Services desk in the MUB. DO NOT TURN IT BACK ON.

My computer is running slowly…
You could have a virus, but chances are you just have too many programs running in the background. Bring your computer to the IT Support Center in Dimond Library for a cleaning/optimization.

What can I do to prevent problems with my computer?
Routine maintenance will go far in preventing many common problems. Perform the following procedures periodically:

  1. Install your operating system updates on a regular basis, particularly when prompted.  These updates address security and performance issues and are key in keeping your computer healthy.
  2. Be aware of what you are installing onto your computer. Many programs come with undisclosed software such as adware and spyware that can add up over time and slow down overall system performance.
  3. Keep your antivirus software updated to ensure maximum protection.  UNH students can get antivirus software for free at virus.unh.edu.
  4. Review our Security Tips
